Cursillo began in the 1930’s in Mallorca,
Spain under the leadership of a priest and a layman, seeking to reactivate the
men in their parish. Since then,
Cursillo, Koinonia, Kairos, Tres Dias, Walk to Emmaus, and other expressions of
this experience have spread around the world. The first weekend in the United States
occurred at Lakeland Air Force Base in Texas in 1949.
The movement spread southwest to Los Angeles, where an Erie Catholic
Priest experienced the weekend. He
founded the Catholic Cursillo in Erie in 1963.
The Episcopal Cursillo was started in 1975.
Many of those active in Koinonia today experienced their weekend with
this group. Many others had their
weekend at the Lake County, Ohio Koinonia in Painesville, which got its start
through the combined efforts of the Erie Catholic Cursillo, Episcopal Cursillo,
and the Buffalo, New York Koinonia. Koinonia of Erie County, PA began in 1983 with the help of Erie Catholic Cursillo, Episcopal Cursillo and Koinonia of Lake County, OH. It is an amazingly ecumenical movement; ONE BREAD, ONE BODY, ONE LORD OF ALL. The Palanca letters we receive from other communities across the country and overseas are testimony to the love of Christ shared among denominations.
